You took the slow road to get here…

Someone somewhere is messing with our Internet…

First ask yourself this: Whats wrong with the Internet? Personally, I don’t think there’s any problem, but some companies (like AT&T, Verizon, Comcas) want make it legal for websites to slowdown other websites – probably your website unless you want to pay a fortune – and prioritise the bandwidth that you’ve payed for to channel their pages.

Outrageous.

Lets put a stop to this madness before it all goes to far. These websites will give you more information on how you can help fight this, and just what is happening out there: SaveTheInternet or It’sOurInternet

The Internet needs YOU! (Imagine old American guy pointing his finger at you). That’s YOU!

Zoom to Mars.

This is rather cool. It’s by those clever people at google.

Its another map but this time of Mars. You can scroll around and zoom in. Take in the martian sites like Olympus Mons or Valles Marineris.

Boinc at home… or at work… or in fact anywhere

This is really new, but It’s still pretty good. Remember the Seti@home software you could down load years back, well its still running, but now there’s 10 other projects running to, and you can download all of them if you want and run them on your computer when it’s not doing anything.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

My favourite ones are:

BBC Climate Change Experiment – Save the planet (running for half the time on my work computer)
LHC@Home – CERN’s particle accelerator
Einstein@Home – Pulsar search
SETI@home – Hello world!

Maze of Rah

This is a cool little game I’ve come across. The idea is the mummy walks along and kicks the last part of the pyramid into place. The puzzle is, he can only follow a certain route and the route changes as he walks over it.

Bonus.com® – Fun and Games!

Be warned, there’s 100 levels…

Edit: you can’t link straight to the game so have a look at the maze sections.

Find the stuff star's are made of..

The stardust nasa mission has just returned to Earth after seven years in space and being bombarded by a comet. Its has on board material stolen from that comet, and should help to understand the origins of our solar system.

It was a successfully touchdown, the parachute opened and as far as is known, the material is on board waiting to be analyzed…

…and the good news is you can help to find it! Berkeley university has created a program that acts like a virtual microscope. You’ll be able to zoom in on the material to try to work out if its actually material that has come from the stars! But first you’ve got to pass a test! The website is here and you can register for the test by giving your email here – I’ve already signed up of course – Good luck!

Its here and its so broad…

Yep, you’ve guessed it, I’ve finally got Broadband in. Only took a week to set it all up, send me out a modem, and hook in. Not bad me thinks. Thanks PlusNet.

As I said before I’ll be reporting on how well they do, but so far I’m very happy with it. And I’ve even got a 2Mb connection – well it’s pretty fast for the UK anyway! (My last was only 512 k)

No, its late so I’m off to bed.

Broadband.

So I’ve made the plunge then and I’ve signed up for broadband with PlusNet. It was pretty cheap compared to some others, and it doesn’t have any download limits on. Also they were higly rated on ADSLGuide, a website I’d highly recommend if your looking to change or install your broadband.

Unfortunately, I made a mistake when I signed up and gave them my wrong delivery address so I had to ring up to change it. I called them on the phone and my first experience with them was a recorded voice on the line saying “Call waiting time’s are in excess of 15 minutes”, Great! Still, the good news is that it lied and I was only waiting about 5 minutes, which was good – although it was obvious they were busy at the time because they guy was speaking so fast I could hardly understand him!

It’s still going to take at least a week for it to be all set up, but when it is I’m sure I’ll be making regular reports of how good they are doing.

Now time for home. (I’m blogging from work!) Later.

Work post.

Well, finally got access to the Internet again, at work anyway. Dam, I miss it when I can’t use it.

Took first step in getting Broadband at home though, I got a BT phone line in, well actually I’ve had to wait four days for them to connect me, apparently it takes a lot of time to “Flick a switch”… The BT Line is costing me £10.50 a month and that’s the cheapest I could pay and remember that’s without paying for a broadband account.

I’ve just been looking at the broadband provider PlusNet – they seem to be comparatively cheap and highly recommended on ADSL Guide – so if no-one else has any suggestions I think I’ll go with them.

Back to work now.
